Sounds like he was just looking for you to give him money straight out. You made him a damn good offer/opportunity many people would love to have, if he didn't want it then he either wanted quick cash or *maybe* really just advice on what to do with his wife (besides dump her ;p)
I'd put my money on him just wanting money straight out tho....
