It takes brains to read a book, and if those kids had brains, they wouldn't like the movie to begin with.
LOTR is for mindless people that are entertained with cartoon images. The same crowd that loves Avatar most likely loved LOTR.

Many kids read. It wasn't just adults that made Harry Potter the success it has been.
On Amazon the Fellowship of the Ring is still in the top 10 for sci-fantasy book sales. Someone is reading it.
Also, the books have been around forever and had a huge fanbase before the movie was ever out. Many of the people that bought a ticket were in their 30's and older who had read the books as a kid.
I agree many of the teens that went to see the movie hadn't read the book, but according to IMDB only about 18% of the audience for these movies was under the age of 18.
