I'll bet you a million dollars easily that 99 out of 100 kids who like LOTR have not read the books.
It takes brains to read a book, and if those kids had brains, they wouldn't like the movie to begin with.
LOTR is for mindless people that are entertained with cartoon images. The same crowd that loves Avatar most likely loved LOTR.
