Actually it could explain a lot about his character. One of the things I like about The Walking Dead is they take enough time to develop the characters to where you actually care about them, which is what makes it so brutal when one of them dies. I don't think they would write it just to pander to the gay community, I think it would be an interesting look into who he is and how far he came. I think a lot of people forget what a total prick he was in the first season, and how much he has developed as a person. It would make sense, growing up in an abusive, hillbilly, alpha male household and being secretly gay...
