It's a war zone, not the block down the street. It took time to get very much information about the airliner that was shot down as well. Not like Russia or the Rebels are going to blast the media with pictures when they are denying it happened and it's not like journalist or the Ukrainians can just waltz into rebel controlled territory to snap some pictures to win an argument on the internet.
At this point I'd say Ukraine has much more credibility than Russia. Russia is the one that has lied every step of the way. Ukraine is not perfect, but at least they haven't been lying constantly about what they are doing.
