I have been holding off buying the new MacPro's. They are super fast of course, but I found a different way.
I have 2 x iMac 27's on my desk. I connect them together to form a giant-sized desktop which is super useful of course. But with dual iMacs, you can also switch them back to "separate" machines with a key-click.
So what I do is setup any rendering I need to do on 1 machine, get it started and then switch back to giant desktop mode. This lets me work as normal without any speed loss. Since the machine on my right drives both screens, while the machine on my left is busy doing the rendering, I can work as usual without any slow lagyness. This isn't as fast as the new Mac Pros, but its a very efficient use of the computers I think.
I've never built a Hackintosh but it sounds like it would be a fun project, and if you save money at the same time, why not?
