It sounds like you got stuck with a bad device. I have 12 Apple devices including Apple TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and 4 iMac 27's without any problems to speak of. My old iPhone 4 case finally cracked after 1 too many drops, but even then it still worked.
Have you tried calling Apple for tech support or to get a replacement?
