Which is a big reason the conservative wing of the party wants airtight locked down border security finished and enforced before anything remotely looking like amnesty happens again. They learned their lesson. And Reagan also stated after that he regretted the way it all went down.
That's the conservative wing only though. The RINO's want no part of border security. They want the chamber of commerce to be happy with cheap labor. They also want the drug running to continue as it allows bigger enforcement budgets etc.
The democrats want nothing to do with border security, because every time amnesty is granted, they gain a huge block of voters. So why would they want to lock down the border? And providing amnesty is still a loser political with the majority of the country, including within their own base. Which is a big reason the Dems never touched it when they had full control of Congress and the White House with filibuster proof majorities 2009 and 2010.
In the end its all about their jobs, screw the people and the needs/wants of the country. Status Quo is what 80% of all politicians currently prefer.
