Central idea of nationalism is not uniting different people, the idea is that there is some people that forms identifiable group and that forms or can form a nation. There are many indetifying factors and the most important one is living in a certain area, when we talk about nation.
Different religion is not an automatic excluding factor and neither are many other similar factors. Being acknowledged to be part of some nation is a sum of many things.
