Most people had reservations about calling the Soviet Union socialist. They themselves called it "Real existing socialism" in other words not socialism as Marx and Engels would imagine.
NOW no one thinks there is communism in Russia. It is a brutal capitalist state with limited democratic rights. It has a lot in common with many other states.
