I wouldn't say just hitch hike, but there is a pretty large growing trend of train hoppers and street kids that are street kids by choice.

It's come from the entire lost cause mentality where these kids go to college and had no jobs waiting for them over the last 6 years and so on, so they sort of drop out from the norm. I'd suspect with the economy coming back and jobs being much easier to find the trend is likely to fall off.

I think many of the kids have just said fuck it they are doing their own thing. It's pretty popular trend in many parts of the country. Think Seattle, Portland, New Orleans, Austin, Bolder ect..ect.. Any of the more popular and trendy cities.

Sites like LATFO or Squat the Planet have kinda created a sub culture for these kids. I guess they are modern day hippies and hipsters wrapped into one..
