I'm sensing much sarcasm. :D
Actually I think I heard somewhere or read somewhere early-on (as in near or around season 1, maybe 2) that Martin had made it clear to the media and fanbase that there isn't any one particular protagonist in the story and that no character is untouchable nor completely safe. There's a random chance element to this story that sets it apart from most if not all others.
Thus I find it rather amusing that so many people are bitching about Ned Stark being killed, or any of the Starks for that matter, or any 'liked' characters dying. There's obviously a bigger picture scenario at work here, and the fact that "no character is safe" means that one thing IS guaranteed to the end --- unpredictability, and
realism. Meaning... the story is going to be interesting on a far higher degree than your average hero-defeats-villain-and-saves-the-girl fantasy we've all grown to expect like a bunch of crack addicts demanding our usual fix. And like real life there are no guarantees that any particular 'good' character is going to win or even survive.
I'm sad to see certain characters go, sure, but are they really gone? With all this ressurection stuff going on It's hard to say. And that's the thing that to me is really great about Martin's writing, at least in GoT's. I've attempted here to loosely tie up the bigger picture of the story, but the writer has a good ten million or so ways to bring it all together with all the sub-plots and side-twists he's weaving.
Christ but I get frustrated with some of the comments on different boards and threads. People want it simple. There are "too many side stories". "It's too complex". Then when a book or movie is simple and straightforward they bitch because.... *choke*...
IT'S TOO SIMPLE LOL :D
My only hope is that the next few books are worth the long wait. And given the quality of his work up to this point I'm trusting that it will be. Those fans out there constantly bashing and badgering the guy need to just shut the hell up and let the man write.
