Just because scientists can't "explain" the platypus now doesn't mean the platypus's evolution won't be explained sometime in the future. Galileo discovered Jupiter's planets in the 1600's but he's not considered a failure because he didn't figure out the expansion of the universe while looking through his telescope.
I take it you know the universe is expanding?
