For many, many reasons. This is not stuff you're gonna get from the mainstream but its very well documented.

The US is never going to military war with Russia, but they can attack Russia with Sanctions which have very limited effect as all the analysts are saying. They can increase sanctions, then Russia will fight back as it did with the China deal on gas ($400 bn) which is an attack on the Petrodollar. Russia & China also hold large amounts of US debt so you can get a financial, a proxy war and as the other guy said also a cold war.

Use of the dollar as a mode of payment for energy is the fundamental pillar of the petrodollar and the US economy. It keeps the USD as reserve currency and stops the USD from crashing. US has gone to war over the USD petrodollar many times. End of the petrodollar would be a disaster for the US economy.

Greater sanctions means Russia can unleash their hackers on US stockmarkets, bringing down US economy in a single hit. US can do the same to Russia but who has more to lose?

US is a 17 Trillion economy and Russia is less than 2 Trillion.

Russia can also easily fund militants in regions once invaded by the US. Politically, US will be obligated to send troops, engaging resources as is currently happening in Iraq and who knows where that will go. ISIS has just announced Islamic caliphate in Iraq/Syria so things are moving fast in the wrong direction.

List goes on and on and on........ the US government knows this and that is why they are not pressing serious sanctions on Russia. You'll only hear this from analysts so if youre just following mainstream press you wont catch the real story (read between the lines type thing).
