I moved to a all black neighborhood when I was young. Cops began treating me badly, the local government got absurd, and it even cost me my job, boss called me a hahahahahaha lover. But that was all good, it forced me to depend on myself. I put my camera to work, began building webpages and opened my own computer store. And a neat thing happened, it seems if you move into a slum and begin fixing up your own house, neighbors begin to think theirs might just be worth fixing too. I ended up having a lot of great neighbors in a neighborhood where we all looked out for one another. Certainly one of the better places I have ever lived.
