I think that's exactly why they feel threatened.
I was being serious with the guns thing, it's the same forces. The majority of US soccer fans seem to be younger generation and Democrats.

The US ranking has always been artificially high. It's probably a combination of playing in a weak region, and FIFA wanting to grow the game in the States.
