This sums it up pretty well.
I would also add that it goes against some of the basic and most fundamental concepts of what Americans appreciate it sports.
A very good example are draws. It's nearly impossible for an American to understand that a draw, in some cases, would be almost as good as a win, or even acceptable. Personally, I don't like it either. A game should be played until there is a winner, but with the point system in football (soccer) ties/draws are a part of the game.
