It's true that some people today don't use it to designate race. However, anyone using that term in the presence of African-Americans is insulting them is the worst way possible. If nothing else, I hope this incident would cause people to strike the term from their vocabulary.
To many people, white as well as black, they are crude and disrespectful expressions.
