Further the image of a helpless polar bear surviving on melting floes creates a perception that polar bears are unable to swim. This contradicts basic biology as Steven John Hibbs in The Tonka Report observed:
"Ursus Maritimus is the scientific name for Polar Bear. Ursus in Latin means “bear”, while “maritimus” in Latin means “of the sea”. In Greek, Ursus maritimus literally translates to “Sea Bear”. Now seriously, does that sound like an animal that can’t swim?..
Polar bears roam the Arctic ice sheets and swim in that region’s coastal waters. They are very strong swimmers, and their large front paws, which they use to paddle, are slightly webbed. Some polar bears have been seen swimming hundreds of miles from land—though they probably cover most of that distance by floating on sheets of ice."
