Constipation?
Sorry, had to.
I was a rock journalist back in the '80's/'90's. In fact, I was the last one to interview several celebrities before they died: Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon, Sam Kinison, River Phoenix and a few others. At the time it was sad (always sad) but also 'cool' in a 'street cred' kind of way. But when I see the pattern repeated (as with Amy Winehouse) I do not think it is 'cool'. I didn't back then, either, but other musicians, actors etc would speak of the OD'd with a weird kind of respect.
Now today, with music having less of a cultural impact and the Internet fragmenting fan bases, it seems to me like these new, younger artists are pining for the Glory Days when rock stars ruled the Earth. But those days are mostly gone so perhaps it is a sadness for those imagined times gone by.
OR they could just be people with addictive personalities to begin with, with an urgent need to be liked and noticed and to escape their pain. But this has always been the case for artists. One thing is certain: if you're messing around with needles, or drinking heavily (as in, daily or to extremes), ingesting man-made chemicals (smoking, sniffing, shooting) STOP. Get help. Your life is worth more than a monetary high.
(the above is for people who cannot handle their high and ABUSE drugs & alcohol. For all you clear-thinking drug users and drinkers: party on.)
