In my opinion...this was the end of the books being "good".

After this they Jumped The Shark to me.

The storylines become convoluted and too "Busy" with a million mundane offshoots.

Basically, the entire reasoning for my initial interest is gone by the next book.

There is no war anymore.
Most of the main characters are dead.
The ones left, are in far flung places and adventures with no bearing on the original storyline.

I really think that George R.R. Martin spread it out too thin, and never really had any "ending" for the entire story.

To me the last book just meandered about with no focus at all.

He would need to do one hell of a major kick-ass writing spree to save the series (of books that is).

That is why I think the script writers on HBO are starting to condense and change some of it.

Martin simply seems to have lost his touch as the series of books went on. And now it's been a few years since he's been able to get the next one out.

I've read a few things that say he is in total writer's block.

Wouldn't surprise me. I really, really enjoyed the first couple of books. But for those of you who have read them, you know it's starting to get maddening when there never seems to be any resolution for any of the storylines.
