In the early 90's I worked for a small record label. There was a band that signed with them and got lucky. They had a song used in a TV commercial which helped it get some radio play. Suddenly the band was doing well and in demand. They toured non-stop for almost 2 years behind, basically, just that one song and made some nice cash.
Then they came home and started on the new album. It went nowhere. Almost overnight they disappeared off the radar. Most of the band members had just blown through the cash. One of them had spent thousands on hundreds of pairs of shoes. They just assumed they were going to be stars for a long time.
The only one that was smart was the guitar player who bought a small house and paid cash for it so he could live there on the cheap for the rest of his life if he wanted. Then he put most of the rest of the money into low yield, low risk investments.
