It also has to do with the fact that fewer mid-range paying jobs are being created. When you looks at the job creation numbers over the last 5 years most of the jobs created were either lower paying service and retail type jobs or they were higher paying jobs. Not many mid-range paying jobs are being created. The NY Times reported that 58% of all jobs created since the recession were lower paying and 20% were higher paying (meaning $21 per hour or higher).
So the simple reality is that the jump from a lower paying job to a higher paying job has become more difficult and it can take longer.
