Cars move around the world in massive numbers, car carrying ships load thousands of them per journey. They are stored before they are shipped.
This article from the WSJ explains the batching up of production runs, storage of bulk unsold cars, idling of plants until the glut is sold. It's a cycle.

I worked at the Port of Los Angeles for a while, and every so often a car-carrying ship would come in. A crew of men would drive cars off the ship into a parking lot, then run back into the ship and do it again until the parking lot was full or the ship was empty. It was pretty cool to watch.
