That's some seriously fucked up shit, but it happens more often than we would like to admit. I don't see how "getting a kid" gets you a raise - it's fucking expensive to raise a kid. And when the kids get much older it gets much more expensive.
My brother did something similar recently. He was unemployed and collecting his unemployment check. His gf - who might as well be his wife at this point - has a good job handing a tech department at a small non profit. They cut back on expenses, got a check every month, no problem. The checks just stopped and surprise, he quickly found a job.
Another friend has two boys and a girl. He lost his job and discovered unemployment, then welfare, and god only knows what else. He discovered the four of them on welfare with green stamps and various other programs including section eight and he's better off than working.
We need to limit all of this. Welfare (and even unemployment) should be a short term temporary assistance, not a way of life. If you are a parent and after six months cannot support yourself and your children, your children should go to foster care.
