If you spend $1,000 to attend a show and you can't make that back from the business, deals and new relationships you generate at a show, then no....you shouldn't go. Or if you are starting out then chalk it up to cost of building a business.
Compared to a lot of other industries these shows are virtually free. Especially compared to the revenue you can make if you hammer out ANY decent business.

A friend of mine is a lawyer and their One Day seminar/colloquy is somewhat 800-900$ just for admission, with a small buffet and ONE glass of wine at the 5 to 6 cocktail...
As for affiliate, if an affiliate can't afford a 120$ badge (in our case) you probably don't want him an an affiliate anyway. Just the amount of free booze one will enjoy during the week-end is way over the cost of a badge ...
