I'm like you in that I love the songwriter/artists a lot.
But don't forget that before The Beatles, the music industry was mostly just what you described.
Frank Sinatra didn't write songs. But the man was probably the greatest singer and master of time and phrasing in "modern" time. A true artist who never had to write a single song.
On the flip side...I love Bob Dylan too. His ability to write lyrics makes him a true poet. Can't sing worth shit...but his songwriting and emotive ability in what he does sing put him in rarefied air as well.
And no, I don't think that Pharell or Katy Perry are even close to being in the same league of talent as Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley (another tremendous singer/artist who didn't write songs).
I was just pointing out that back in the day, the music industry worked like that too.
We all sort of got used to band who wrote their own songs (beatles, stones, zeppelin, and every other artist from the 1960's, 70's, 80's, some 90's, etc.)
But as more and more popstars can't even play an instrument and grew up listening to EDM and other non-musical bullshit...they are going to have to start relying on real musicians to write their songs for them.
