The principle became central to the defense of a 2012 shooting of an
unarmed Florida teenager, Trayvon Martin, by a neighborhood watch
volunteer who was following the 17-year-old. George Zimmerman was
acquitted last year.
Not true! GZ's defense had nothing to do with "stand your ground". His shooting was justified as self defense because TM was on top of the man pummeling his head into the concrete sidewalk. All "stand your ground" really means is you do not have a duty to retreat. If you are somewhere legally, you aren't required to attempt to run away, you may face the threat head on, protect yourself and be within your rights.
