Think about what happened in adult over the last 15 years. It's the same thing. These businesses often put short term profits over long term profits and they don't care.

Another angle on this might be that they may have known their updates would hit smaller independent affiliates harder so they didn't care about severing any long term relationship. Think of how many of those same adsense affiliates were hit hard by Panda and Penguin. Many were put out of business even. It's no stretch or lie to say that since 2011 or so the updates have been mostly favoring brands. Google is almost open about it now.
