We have the same issue in Canada. Squatters set themselves up all the time in people's homes. Happened to a friend of my wife. He went away for work out west, months later a bunch of teens were in there.. by the time he got back home, it was condemned., the house had to be torn down, it was so water damaged and destroyed. He even knew who the people responsible were but because he can't "prove" it. He lost 50-60k. He said fuck it, local-law wont help him, he moved out west, permanently.
