You don't have to pay rent. You just have to be able to prove that this is your primary residence.
My brother went through a situation a few years back where his stepson was supposed to stay with them for a week or two at the most and he never left (its a long story including the stepson going to jail a few times).
Anyway, the stepson (who was 18 at the time) refused to leave. After fighting with him off and on for another few weeks, my brother called the police and since the stepson had some way of proving this was his primary residence the police wouldn't remove him and they told my brother he would have to follow legal eviction proceedings to get him out.
It may be different in other states.
