The six million figure was popular during the period for use in reporting the number of jews affected by crisis in many different parts of the world. Anytime they reported that jews were in trouble, it was *always* 6 million who could die if Christians did not provide immediate aide. This was before the information revolution, so they could report this figure in newspapers without anyone noticing the 6 million pattern.
