I just read a Gallup poll yesterday with this question.

Americans said:

Bush 49%
Clinton 46%

Interesting though that Clinton's popularity has increased since he left office. When he left office, about 60% of Americans viewed Clinton unfavorably but now 54% of Americans have a favorable view of him. [Source: Gallup]
