He didn't seem to have a point of view that a particular demographic could latch onto and if you go after the intellectual center you will fail because they have better things to do than watch your show.

Actually what they need is someone who is flamboyant and opinionated, yes, but also has the capacity to be impartial and play the devil's advocate while remaining neutral in such a way that it's devastatingly entertaining, informative, and amusing, all the while having a good raport and the respect of basically everyone he or she interviews.
You know, like Larry King was.
