Can someone please explain how the cookies are deployed and read?

1. Potential buyer clicks on affiliate link, at this point how does the cookie get deployed onto the buyers computer?

2. Then when potential buyer is on merchant site, how does the affiliate program script get the cookie data from the buyers computer?
