The truth is a homeowner with a firearm is more likely to shoot someone they know by accident than shoot an intruder.

What he should have done was armed himself, locked the bedroom door, and called the police. Confronting an intruder in your house should be the very last option, no matter if you have a firearm or not.
What do you think are the chances of having the worlds most epic blow out, with both you and your wife heard screaming at eachother at the top of their lungs by the neighbors who live 400+ feet away, and within a minute after... there's a burglar in your bathroom? It could be a burglar... or it could be your wife. Why would you shoot through a door, unless you KNEW without a shadow of a doubt who was on the other side?

Unlikely. I think... very unlikely.
