This might be true.
So far as I am concerned, Crimea is part of Ukraine. It should remain there. If people in Crimea are unhappy about this, they can leave. Clearly it hasn't been that much of an issue since 1954; I'm not sure why it's so urgent now.
At the same time, I don't see any point in trying to keep Crimea part of Ukraine. If they are unhappy being part of Ukraine they will continue to be unhappy, and be more of a problem than an asset.
Either way, this wouldn't effect the natural gas pipelines in Ukraine (they don't go through Crimea), and either way both Russia and Ukraine would still have ocean access. Russia doesn't need a Naval base in Crimea - Russia already has coastline on the black sea without Crimea.
