The Russians liberated Eastern Europe, they did not plan to invade Eastern Europe it was a result of the nazi attack on them.
They controlled the defence and foreign policy but allowed a the local communist parties a free hand in domestic policy.
The Poland I know in the 70s had a lot to say for it. Full Employment, housing for everyone, free education, free health service, very cheap transport. A polish TV, film industry, books and music.

Was everyone happy ? were there no problems? of course not ...the problems we all hear about non stop a lot of them were real....
But is you have a job and a house it is better than having to leave your country to find work in London living in one room with your wife and kid.
