You are 100% correct and any American that is offended has blinders on. I've been to LA a few times - each time being super excited and each time arriving only to end up thinking "wow, this place is a complete fucking cesspool of garbage, graffiti, traffic, dangerous areas and shady characters. It's thoroughly insane that something like Hollywood BLVD which every tourist is going to see is so filthy and full of shady/disturbing people, junkies and homeless.
