You know.. When I lived in NJ we knew every time we seriously snowed we would not only be snowed in, but without power. This would be two or three days, three or four times every winter. We banked food before hand, and spent our summers cutting down firewood so we would have heat.
After the earthquake in 1989 and the town being evacuated, I make sure I'm ready for everything... We always have more than plenty of non perishable food in the house, soup, water, and ways to cook without power be it the bbq or sterno. We've only lost power here once for a few hours in the past eight years, but we are ready if we have to go a few days.
