Well, when you consider that Stalin starved 3 to 5 million of them the death just eight years previous to the arrival of the Germans it's little wonder that the remaining population initially welcomed Hitler's rule. Unfortunately for them the Nazi's treated them like shit too.
And if all that wasn't bad enough, after the war even more of them starved to death in the 1946 to 1947 famine.
