William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award

The William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award is named for the brilliant Academy Award(R)-winning actor. After appearing in several films and serving in the Armed Forces during World War II, Holden finally became a 'star'. It was 1950 and the movie was "Sunset Boulevard." The film won Holden an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor. Although he did not win the Oscar(R) for that performance, Holden did receive the coveted trophy for his role in the 1953 film "Stalag 17." William Holden does have a Las Vegas connection. Holden married Brenda Marshall in 1941 inside a Congregationalist Church in Las Vegas.

The LVFCS is proud to bestow upon filmmaker Spike Lee this award bearing his name. We would like to thank the estate of actor William Holden (1918-1981) for their generosity in allowing the LVFCS to honor Mr. Holden's contribution to motion pictures in this modest way.

After graduating from Morehouse College, Shelton "Spike" Lee entered New York University's Institute of Film and Television, where he won the 1982 Student Academy award for his film, "Joe's Bed-Sty Barbershop: We Cut Heads." Shortly afterward, he went on to win the Los Angeles Film Critics New Generation award and the Prix de Jeuness at the Cannes Film Festival for his 1986 film "She's Gotta Have It."

Lee followed with "School Daze," a musical comedy about color and class consciousness among African-American college students. Other Spike lee 'joints' include "Mo' Better Blues," "Jungle Fever," "Do the Right Thing," "Malcolm X," "Clockers," "4 Little Girls," "Get on the Bus," "Bamboozled" and, most recently, "25th Hour." Lee's commitment to fearlessly taking on controversial subjects not only presented audiences with challenging social commentary, but also with some of the most engaging and entertaining films of the latter 20th century and into the new millennium.

For his accomplishments as an independent thinker, provocateur and filmmaker, the Las Vegas Film Critics Society is proud to honor Spike Lee with this year's William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award.
