I've been using Linux for many years. I'm going to switch a laptop over to Linux shortly as well. I find Arch Linux to be the best choice for me but Linux n00bs might be better with Ubuntu, Mint, or OpenSUSE.

Some Linux distributions are as effortless as windows if not more so (generally no malware and all the hassle associated with that) but the thing is you are used to the Windows way of doing things. Sometimes Linux has it's own way -- for instance with using software repositories. It's not necessarily any harder.
