Depends on what you want in the long run, how much time do you want spend learning the software and how advanced editing do you want to do.

I find Sony Vegas very user friendly (especially for new users) and perfect for basic editing.
Most of the FHG cutting and tube clips I do in the Sony Vegas.

But while you can do almost everything in Sony Vegas, for advanced editing such as trailer cutting, color correction, title animation etc... I suggest Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. Those take a while to learn and master but you won't look back once you do.

Before anything I suggest you to check out the video editing basics tutorials, there are a lot of them around.
