original story:

GLENDALE, AZ - Police are investigating after shots were fired during a shoplifting attempt at Arrowhead Mall in Glendale this afternoon.

Sgt. Jay O'Neill said officers responded around 12:15 p.m. to the shopping center near Loop 101 and Bell Road.

Sears security officers reportedly tried to apprehend a man and woman for shoplifting when the woman opened fire inside the store. O'Neill said no one was struck by gunfire in the confrontation.

The couple fled the area on a black motorcycle, according to O'Neill.

The suspects are described as a white male with a "scruffy" beard, and a white female seen wearing a blue hoodie, jeans and a backpack.

O'Neill said officers are searching the surrounding area for the suspects, and are currently checking a similar-looking motorcycle at a nearby apartment complex.

There is currently no closure of the mall, but O'Neill said it is an active scene as police continue to investigate.

Air15 video showed a large police presence and crime tape blocking off the area directly in front of the Sears entrance.

update:

GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Glendale Police are recommending the man who fired four shots at shoplifting suspects outside Arrowhead Mall last Friday be charged with a felony.

Police will ask the Maricopa County attorney to charge Mervin Brewer, 61, with unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Mervin Brewer, 61, was sitting in a vehicle waiting for his wife at a Sears store, and saw one of the suspects pull a gun on a loss prevention officer. Brewer got out of his vehicle to help.

As he approached the suspects, he saw his 64-year-old wife walking out of the store. Fearing for the safety of his spouse and the officer, Brewer opened fire toward the armed suspect, identified as Shaashana Hough, 33, police said.

The gun the suspect was allegedly holding was later determined to be a toy.

Shaashana Hough is being held on $50,000 bond on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated assault while Michael Hough, 35, is being held on $38,000 bond on suspicion of armed robbery.

Glendale police said the couple was in the process of shoplifting a DeWalt 18-volt cordless drill in a Sears store.

Michael Hough removed the security packaging from the item and walked out of the store without paying for the drill, according to a probable cause statement.

As they were leaving from the upper level, an unarmed loss prevention officer tried to stop them.

A woman who was outside Arrowhead Towne Center when it happened that day told 911 dispatchers, "I am not injured but the bullet went right by my head."

Authorities released several 911 calls and surveillance footage on Wednesday.

Another 911 caller, who had been parked at a nearby movie theater, reported a bullet hole in her car.

The suspects fled on a black motorcycle.

Another 911 caller reported seeing the vehicle speed away.

A sport bike matching the description was found at a nearby apartment complex in the 17600 block of North 79th Avenue. Officers were able to match the motorcycle's registration to Michael Hough.

The couple was arrested Saturday night in the area of 26th Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Phoenix
