I guess I have to disagree with this part.
If we were just mindless zombies living under complex illusions nothing would ever change. We would create a society where we were comfortable and content then we would stay in our little bubble and "survive and reproduce."
But we don't do that. One day a zombie figured out that if you build a canal to bring the water close to where we live it makes things better. Another figured out how to harness electricity or how to burn coal, gas, oil etc. We are constantly working to improve and better our society.
Busy work serves no real purpose other than to keep you busy and while there are certainly some people that spend their days doing just that, there are many that don't. There are many things that people do that directly make our lives better, happier or more healthy.
