That is the truly unfortunate aspect of this and one that I personally feel compelled to speak out about and try to educate others about. If everyone understood this..really understood it we would be much better off as a species. That will probably not happen since we evolved to have leaders who exploit and the masses who are quite happy to mindlessly follow without questioning why.

I look at it very differently.
I look at all the stupidity and see that there is in fact a great deal of balance when you remove yourself from the discussion. The idiocy is on both sides. The arguments are almost always retarded and seemingly pointless - but the fact is that the more retarded things get, the more definitively the center is defined. The more definitively, "normal" can be defined. The mean is determined largely by the extremes.
If everyone agreed, if everyone was reasonable, if everyone was on the same page and thought the same, we would likely die off quite quickly. How does that society where every single individual believes peace and love and good will ultimately win, fight off a Nazi invasion? Doesn't this require vigorous debate? Doesn't vigorous debate require diverse views and opinions and beliefs? In the interest of vigorous debate... wouldn't those views have to be absurd in order that people experience a strong enough emotional response to get involved? As it is, we are very changeable. We are crazy. We are unpredictable. We are irrational. We are illogical. We have people who can't wait for war... we have people who abhor war. All the arguments have to be heard for a decision to be made and ultimately, more often than not, the best or correct decision wins.
We are essentially mindless zombies living under the effects of a number of complex illusions to convince us of the contrary, because nothing more is needed. Your brain doesn't need to "think". It simply needs to survive and reproduce its genes. Everything else is just busy mental work for self important idiots. The sad part is that you and I are also cogs in that machine. Two lug nuts on a Prius, debating as if we matter so much, we directly influence traffic patterns in a 10,000,000 person city, the nation and the world... and every time a car drives by missing 2 lug nuts, we pretend we didn't notice.
