Two of the nation's oldest universities, Princeton and Rutgers, are located in New Jersey. The state ranks in the top 10 in the nation in the number of manufacturing sites and in payroll. The average worker in New Jersey brings home just under 44-thousand dollars a year. Of all the states, New Jersey has the highest population density about 1,144 people per square mile, compared to a national average of just over 80.
