All of those workers reside in Manila, which is 100% fine. Most Filipinos didn't miss a single day of work. None of them, not one, live and work in the area that was totally destroyed. Everyone's cheap labor is safe and sound.
What you don't understand about this business is, if everyone's workers need help, they get it. People take care of their own. But they don't need help. So either you're being played by your "best and most reliable guys" or you're just another American idiot. My guess is a little of both.
