Here is an interesting chart. It shows average salaries of doctors for several countries. Some interesting thoughts about it. Below the chart they talk about how doctors who are self employed and have their own practices make more than those who work for others (which makes sense). Another interesting thing is that in some of these countries doctors may start their careers with zero education debt while in the US the average doctor starts their career with $129K in student debt. Another factor would be insurance costs. I don't know the number, but I would imagine US doctors pay a hell of a lot more in insurance costs that many others.

I have a feeling if the US went to a single payer system doctors would continue to be paid very well.
